According to the new City of Toronto regulation, weeping tiles are not allowed to be connected to the sanitary sewer pipes. The water, collected by the storm drain, has to go to the sump pit and the pump has to discharge it to the outside. There exist many brands of sump pumps on market. Typically, for one family house, it is enough 1/3 HP ( horse power ) pump. It uses 110 volts to work automatically with a so-called floater switch. The two types of pumps are pedestal and submersible. We does not recommend the pedestal type because it is weaker compared to the submersible one.
Someone might ask what will happen if there is no power - well, the pump will not work. To avoid this situation, We suggests to install a battery backup pump that helps to discharge the water from a pit, in case of a power outage or other reasons that stop primary pump working. In the GTA, there is an incentive to install or upgrade both primary and secondary sump pumps. Home owners can get up to $1750 for pump installation or replacement.
