The underground main drain and the sewer pipe installations have some requirements that are outlined in the Ontario plumbing codes. First of all, the size of the pipe for a single family dwelling must be 4” PVC. Secondly, a minimum slope has to be maintained for proper drainage and it must be at least 1/8” per foot. Third, an overall rule for all sizes of drain pipes is “no sharp change of direction“. Fourth, in some areas, it is mandatory to install backwater valve to protect basement from sewage backup. If you live in the GTA and need help with the main drain or the sewer, call our sewer and drain licensed technicians and we’ll be happy to help.
Houses built prior to the 1980s have a main drain and sewer lines made of clay. As everything in nature, pipes get older and problems arise. Firstly, the pipes receive small cracks and the roots grow inside. It is common that the more they grow, the bigger the pressure on the pipe. Eventually, such pipes collapse and require replacements. On the picture, an old broken clay pipe was removed and a new PVC pipe is installed in the basement. It is quite often that plumbers have to do additional work in order to make sure that the plumbing complies with the current Ontario building codes.
For example, it is mandatory to install a primer ( a tiny tube that supplies some amount of water to the P-trap, preventing complete evaporation) to every floor drain. Without it, bad sewage smells can easily enter the living space, therefore creating a hazard to humans. All codes are important and developed to guarantee people’s safety.
